The theme for Poster 2 was a movie poster. We had to create a movie poster and incorporate principles of color theory, textual elements with organizational principles and carefully think about the signifier and signified in our poster.

This is the process I underwent whilst making my second haiku-inspired poster 'A Wonderful Lie'.

"A World of dew

and within every dewdrop

a world of struggle."

(Kobayashi Issa, 2020)

The second theme I took whilst analyzing my haiku was the idea that not everything is as it seems - a façade. That what lies underneath beauty or the journey taken to get to an outcome or result is not always pretty or as easy as it seems. I depicted this idea through my personal take on a movie poster.

The process:

First I thought of some initial visualizations that could represent my idea. I then refined my idea into a chosen concept so that I could have a better understanding of what my poster would actually look like.

I then drew more refined elements of my poster design i.e. the flowers and hands and I scanned them onto illustrator to begin prototyping.

As you can see from my images, I played around with repetition - by adding more flowers, text alignment - by centering my texts and then creating contrast by having my title words in hierarchy i.e. going downwards and to the right. This allowed the text itself to have a ways of meaning i.e. to signify the hierarchy between the words as well as the order of a life cycle. What I mean is that the title broken down - "A" represents existence, "Wonderful" represents the memories and experiences we collect as we exist" and "Lie" represents the underlying bad experiences or the idea that we may deny the inevitable end of our existence. However, this was my personal insight of my title so it might not have been analyzed by others to such an extent. Contrast was also explored as I played with gradient and white and black space.

I continued to refine and explore different texts as well as text alignment, and with the help of feedback from my peers I reached a final poster.

What I realized in my final poster was that I was exploring the idea of contrast in a way that made my whole poster harmonious. By this I mean, the use of black and white color scheme made my poster elements more similar as well as draw attention to my red flowers as well. As a reflection for myself as designer reviewing my own process, I could have developed more as well as explored more typography, alignment, colour schemes, and gestalt principles.
