Reflection: Who Am I As A Designer?

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

I didn't delve into the world of design realistically until year 11 of high school. Growing up, I was a creative child who enjoyed the arts such as reading/writing, painting, singing and especially drawing as I could always be seen carrying around a drawing pad. Drawing was an interest of mine and I drew a lot of things! Varying from nature to characters to abstract art and even portraits although more akin to stick figures.

But it wasn't until my third year of high school, 16 years of age, where that interest in drawing manifested particularly into drawing house exteriors and interiors when I was introduced to the world of architecture through my first design project - Small Spaces.

Architecture became so fascinating to me, as I learnt about the many processes that happened behind the scenes of building houses that I didn't even realize occurred! From the technical part of it such as construction, materials, site analysis to the aesthetic part of it, such as exterior design and materials, interior design and roof type, (J C. Morel, 2000) it all increased my fascination in Architecture although at first, left me almost overwhelmed by the amount of work put into ensuring a house is functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Thus when I was presented with more Spatial designs briefs throughout high school, where design problems changed and I had to design houses from my own perspective but cater to different audiences, it further fuelled my interest in Architectural Design as well as design in the industry, and made me aspire to one day become a designer capable of designing my own house.

With this aspiration in the back of my head, as every new design project was presented to me in high school, particularly my Spatial design briefs, I tried to utilize as many design skills learned as possible so that I could grow not only as a designer but as an innovative individual in society. I believe that I still have a long way to go before I become the designer I aspire to be and that there is always room for improvement but then, I also believe in my design courses at the University of Auckland, I have the opportunity to gain more experience and knowledge to fuel my growth as a designer as well as broaden my design fields.

I hope that my future is related to innovative architectural design (Matthias Jarke, 2011) and that I can one day build the house I envision with my own designs as the foundation.
